PRESTON, MD - Choptank Transport is pleased to announce the success of its first, year-long wellness program which will culminate with one lucky participant traveling to New York City for a taping of the hit TV show “Dr. Oz.”.
Choptank’s wellness program, which kicked off in February 2013, is free to all employees. In addition to monthly meetings and lectures, two nurses from the Caroline County Health Department are on hand from 11:00 – 3:00 to do blood pressure checks, weigh-ins and body/mass-index (BMI) measurements. Although the lectures are over, the health department monthly monitoring schedule will continue.
Paula Greer, graduate of the Nurse Midwifery program at Georgetown University, was Choptank’s wellness coach. Greer is one of Dr. Oz’s success stories, having lost 86 pounds over the course of a year. She went from a size 20 to a size 4 with the help of Drs. Oz and Roizen and their YOU book series. Greer has appeared on the Dr. Oz show several times and is good friends with both doctors and lectures regularly about health and wellness in the D.C. and Baltimore areas.
More than twenty employees participated in the first year's classes. Each employee was given a pedometer, a water bottle and a tape measure on their first day. Topics of discussion included the importance of exercise, a healthy diet and ways to reduce stress. Almost every session began with a healthy snack alternative, provided by Greer.
Prize incentives are awarded on a 6-month and a year-end basis. An employee who stopped smoking during the program received the 6-month prize; a $600 gift certificate towards a piece of home exercise equipment.
Other cash prizes are awarded at the end of the program, as well as a weekend pass, with guest, to Greer’s bed and breakfast, located on the banks of the Choptank River. The stay includes daily sessions with a personal trainer and an afternoon cruise down the river.
The employee who made the most significant change in their health will be awarded the grand prize. This is an all-expense paid trip, with guest, to New York City to be a part of the audience during an upcoming live taping of the Dr. Oz show, which may include a backstage meeting with Dr. Oz and the cast and crew of the show.
